Chinese Noodle Restaurant, Haymarket

I was at uni with bloomingroses and we both had a sudden craving for xiao long baos. Immediate must have!

So we left to wander Haymarket and came across the Chinese Noodle Restaurant at the Prince Centre. It is located next to Menya, and we were lured in by this sign that they had placed outside the storefront:

Now, I don't know if you can read Chinese but the phrase 'xiao long bao' is written on the menu, where it says 'steamed pork buns'. Other items on the sign include popular dishes commonly seen with the xiao long baos, such as pan-fried dumplings and pan-fried pork buns.

So we went inside and ordered a half serve of the xiao long baos, and a half serve of the pan-fried pork buns.

While we waited for the food, I had a look around and admired the landscapes on the wall.

We drank some tea and eagerly waited for our xiao long baos to arrive.

To further whet our appetites, bloomingroses had ordered a traditional noodle dish.

Noodles ($9)

The plate was large and you definitely got value for money.

The noodles were served lukewarm with fresh cucumber and a light mince meat sauce. It was quite nice.

Very soon after, our other dishes arrived.

Steamed pork buns ($4.50) aka xiao long baos?????

And you can only imagine our disappointment when these buns arrived! The so-called 'xiao long baos'?! They were just steamed pork buns! With no soup inside.

The dough was thick and a bit bland.

So we crossed our fingers for the pan-fried pork buns.

Pan -fried pork buns ($4.50)

And these were.........exactly the same as the same as the steamed ones but pan fried! i.e. there was no soup inside either!

What had happened? Did we read the menu wrong? Is this a case of permanent misdescription?

Bloomingroses had ordered the 'xiao long baos' in Chinese so there couldn't be any confusion there....

What a disappointment! After half-heartedly eating the buns, we left with an unsatisfied craving.
