Dessert Kitchen, Chinatown

Dessert Kitchen is relatively new to the Asian dessert scene in Sydney but looks to have been around in Hong Kong  and also Melbourne for a while.

I had seen some photos of their matcha crepe cake on Instagram and was keen to check it out.

There is limited seating inside and judging by the waiting list papers at the door, I guessed that they may also receive a queue sometimes.  Luckily there was no queue when we got there (early Sunday evening) and we walked straight in.

Ujikintoki Traditional Japanese Style - $11.50
Shaved green tea ice, red bean, mini rice balls, red bean vanilla ice cream

The Ujikintoki was a nice mix of Asian style desserts in one bowl.  The shaved ice had a strong green tea flavour, the mini rice balls on the other hand - no flavour.

Uji matcha crepe cake - $12.80

I was actually shocked by how bad this matcha crepe cake was.

Having just gone onto Zomato to read some other reviews, I am glad to see that I am not the only one who was disappointed.

Let me start by saying that my point of comparison for matcha crepe cakes is Lady M.  No other crepe cake that I have tasted has ever managed to beat how delicious their crepe cake is.  But I am always open to trying others and as long as it meets a bare minimum standard, I am generally happy.

This cake was tasteless - it did not taste of green tea at all.  I know it looks green in the picture, but there was nowhere near enough matcha in that cake to give it green tea flavour.

They served it straight from the refrigerator so the layers were stuck together and created an unappetising bland stodgy mouthful that I eventually gave up on eating.

I would not come back to Dessert Kitchen again.
